The Next Era of AI Is Personal Agents
Oct 23, 2026The next era of AI is here, and you may not have noticed it yet.
I recorded a short video on this. Watch it first, then read on for the details.
AI Has Been a Transaction Since 2022
In 2022, ChatGPT came out. It was a text model. You typed something in, and text came back out.
Every year since then, AI picked up new modes. You could put text in and get audio out, then video out, and later you could put video in and get images out. Today you can mix those modes across many different models and a growing list of specialized apps.
Through all of it, the basic experience stayed the same. You sit at the keyboard, put something in, and wait for something to come out.
What a Personal AI Agent Does
A personal agent keeps working after you close the chat. You hand it a goal, and it takes the steps.
4 Traits of a Personal AI Agent
- It stays on all the time, so work can keep moving when you step away.
- It acts before you ask, based on what it knows about your goals.
- It runs multi-step workflows from start to finish.
- It uses third-party apps and services to get real things done for you.
That last trait is the big one for me. An agent that can book, schedule, and follow up inside the tools you already use could change how much of your week you spend at the keyboard.
The First Wave of Personal AI Agents
You will see 5 names come up again and again right now.
5 Personal AI Agents to Know
- Meta Muse launched on September 8, 2026, for U.S. users on iOS, Android, and the web. Meta designed it to be more proactive and longer-running than a typical chatbot.
- Grok Bot from xAI launched as a beta on August 12, 2026. It runs on its own cloud computer, completes tasks across apps and websites, and checks in with you when it needs approval.
- Instinct is invite-only and works through text, voice calls, or WhatsApp. It can order items online, find flight deals, book hotels, and set reminders.
- ChatGPT Dots arrived on September 29, 2026, at OpenAI's DevDay. These always-on agents in ChatGPT each run on their own cloud computer, and they started rolling out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers.
- Claude Duet is the newest. Anthropic announced Claude Duet on October 21, 2026, as a research preview on Android, iPhone, and the web. It connects to more than 6,000 apps and sends you a morning brief on the most important items across them.
Agentic AI Is Reaching Everyday Users
Agentic AI tools showed up a couple of years ago for the technical crowd: the people on the frontier, the early innovators.
Personal agents bring that same capability to everyday users. Most of these show up in a phone app or a chat you already know how to use. I expect widespread adoption to follow.
Rethink How AI Fits Your Work and Life
This shift asks you to rethink how you use AI for your work. It also asks you to rethink how AI relates to everything else you do, personal or work.
You will be deciding what to hand to a tool that acts on its own. Thoughtful leaders will draw those lines in different places, so settle a few questions before you start.
How to Get Ready for a Personal AI Agent
- List the repeat tasks in your week that follow the same steps every time.
- Write a never-touch list. Care for people, confidential details, and money decisions stay with you.
- Pick one workflow and test an agent on it first. Check every result yourself at the start.
- Decide what the agent may do without asking you. Write it down so your team works from the same rules.
For leaders who serve people, the reason to hand off routine work is simple. You get time back for the people and decisions that need you.
